Formation & mentorship
Carmen Stoianov trained at the National University of Music in Bucharest as a member of its first graduating musicology cohort. Her teachers included Octavian Lazăr Cosma in the history of Romanian music, Ioana Ștefănescu in universal music history and Domnica Constantinescu in musical forms. She became the principal disciple of Academician Professor Octavian Lazăr Cosma.
Teaching & academic leadership
She began as a piano teacher at the Dinu Lipatti National College of Arts and later served at the National University of Music in Bucharest, teaching Romanian music history and musicology. Her university career also included repeated mandates as Dean and Vice-Dean, direction of doctoral research committees and international lectures. In 2002 she became Dean of the Spiru Haret Music University.
Research, criticism & cultural life
Her scholarship ranges from Romanian musical neoclassicism and studies of major composers to the sonic dimensions of literature, folklore and sacred texts. She has contributed to specialist journals and cultural publications and has taken part in symposia, festivals and composition competitions in Romania and abroad.
She is a member of the Romanian Union of Composers and Musicologists and the International Society for Contemporary Music, and a founding figure in several cultural and critical associations.
Honors & distinctions
The Romanian Academy awarded her the “Ciprian Porumbescu” Prize for Cărțile Psalmilor. Reflexii în sonor. Her work has also received multiple annual prizes from the Romanian Union of Composers and Musicologists.
Her contributions to cultural media include the television series Portret în sunet, Cu și despre muzică, and collaborations with Valeriu Râpeanu on Maeștri ai culturii românești.
